Building Your Books
Layflat
perfect binding begins with a traditional PUR-bound book block
ready for cover attachment. Instead of application at the spine,
however, these products are attached to the front and back cover
using strong hot-melt adhesives. This allows the cover to "float"
over the spine and does not restrict it from opening flat on any
page.
Materials
Tip: In order for books to lay flat, the grain direction of
all stock used for your project must run parallel to the spine.
This is because the paper fibers naturally expand following binding.
Cross-grain expansion can restrict movement along spine scores
and in some cases, crack, chip or wrinkle your covers and pages.
Layout
Tip: For maximum glue adhesion, knock out all copy on the
inside covers at least 1/2" from either side of the spine,
where the cover will be attached to the book block. Some glues
may not bond well to certain inks and coatings, and exposing as
much paper fiber as possible can create a stronger, more durable
hold.
